Course description

The General 20 course focuses on language fluency as a main goal. The four major skills students will practice are reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are active participants and learn grammar, vocabulary and common expressions by working and speaking with their classmates.

This course is suitable for students of any level from Beginner to Advanced who want to improve their level by gaining confidence in all areas of the English language and who want to improve their fluency and ability to use English in everyday situations and contexts.

Please note that the first day is mainly focused on pre-test and orientation. This is the timetable of the student for the first day:

08:30 - Student arrival and check-in
09:00 - Placement test and interviews
11:00 - Welcome breakfast and orientation with various EC staff members
12:00 - Welcome tour of school neighbourhood

Students taking courses with 20 or 24 lessons per week will not have class on the first day due to orientation, while those taking courses with 30 lessons per week will have two classes in the afternoon on the first day after orientation.

After the first day, lessons alternate between morning and afternoon sessions on a daily basis.

What can you expect on this course?

Real English
You will experience how English is spoken and used in many real-life situations. Relevant and engaging lessons will develop your understanding of grammar, vocabulary, idioms and pronunciation, and give you practice in the use of everyday English through the four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Creative and energetic classes
Our teachers are qualified and experienced, and when it comes to creating lessons, they know what works. Classes are dynamic, engaging and motivating, designed to activate and build upon your strengths, whilst also giving targeted attention to your weaker areas. Relaxed and informal classroom environments create an encouraging atmosphere, to help you build your confidence, realise your potential and advance towards fluency.

Learn by doing
At EC, progress is maximised as students are encouraged to learn by doing. Our task-based lessons focus on the active production of English, promoting class participation and interaction between students.

Improve your ‘thinking time’
As your skills and confidence develop with support from your teachers, so too will your ability to listen, understand and respond quickly and effectively in English. You will notice these improvements most of all when you take your English outside of the classroom and into everyday conversation in one of our vibrant English-speaking destinations!

Expert support
Your teachers are trained to deliver on-going support, feedback and care throughout your time at EC. You will be taught by at least two teachers, exposing you to a variety of voices, improving your listening and boosting your vocabulary.

Authentic materials
We believe there is no substitute for authentic English so, in addition to text books, our teachers use real-life resources taken from newspapers, TV, radio and the Internet. The authentic nature of these materials gives our students an appreciation of the richness of the English language used in a variety of everyday contexts.

"Conversation practise"

johanna ragnartz, student from Sweden

I had very good and informative conversation classes twice a week. My intent was to improve my professional language, but I got a professional coach. My teacher pushed me in thinking through my purpose of various kind of presentatoins, to target my messages and also how to present them in a more compelling way. My expectations was on language and wording, but I ended up in getting a full-on management class.

"Very professional, warm welcome, good teachers"

Paul Emmanuel Kapp, student from Switzerland

The school is very good located! The organization is very clear and the staff take really care of you. The teachers are competent and involved.
Perhaps some of them give too much information at the same time.
I stayed only two weeks and it is difficult to judge. I'm certain this manner of teaching will be perfect for at least two or three month.

"Combination EC Language School and New York City provided me the excellent language course and unforgettable experiences in NYC."

Andrej Huluk, student from Slovakia

I can recommend EC's 30+ course to all adults over 30 who are concerned to apply for a language course because of the presence young teenage students in the class. So, this course is tailored exactly for the needs 30+ people.

The general English course covered all the essential areas of everyday language i.e., talking, listening and writing. On average, there were from 6 to 10 students in the classroom, so the talking exercises were carried out in pairs with your neighbor. We worked with book and workbook delivered by school but sometimes teachers supplied students with additional work materials available in pdf, so students could work on his own mobile phones or tablets. At the school there were approximately 18 classrooms and all were equipped with very modern interactive tools connected to the internet.

All teachers were in term of language very skilled. They were helpful and supportive if the student had any question regarding the language. They were very nice in personal term too.

Even attending language course in New York will not ensure that English will stick to the student itself. To make the most of it I recommend participating and be active as much as possible at the school, do homework, also to take part after-school activities offered by the school (they were available every week, sometimes even for free) and communicate with people around. There is no easier way on hand to improve in English than this.

"Good teachers and good location"

Aryam De Soto, student from Dominican Republic

The teachers are amazing, the school has the best location in New York. I didn't use housing so I don't have comments about that and because of Covid we just had two social activities.

"Warm,powerfull and efective school !"

toshie ishizu, student from Japan

I attended school with a slightly anxious feeling for the first time. I do not need worry. The staff is warm. The lesson is set every day in rotation in the morning and the afternoon. Therefore I can enjoy various NY.It is possible for students to enjoy conversation with free coffee in a lobby in break time. I took a lunch with students everyday. The staff recommends us various nice cafe for lunch..There were ten students in the class. The teacher considers that all the members can participate in a conversation. Though I was a 1-week- student, I can learn the text which I purchased online after returning home. It is very useful. I had a very nice time in this school..

"I learned a lot and improved my skills with success"

Alain Jordi, student from Switzerland

I loved to get new contacts to people around the world with the cultural exchange. The teachers are very, very good and they attracted the lessons with really good didactic skills. The location is NY downtown, beautiful for me. The housing was very good and my host welcomed me as well.

The only point is the coffee in the break. It was often empty till I had a chance to get one.

Overall it was a good success

Additionally, you will have open access to common areas such as the living room, kitchen, dining room, etc.

It is unusual to have a washing machine in apartments. Most Manhattan homes have a common laundry room in the building or there will be a laundromat nearby.

Breakfast varies from homestay to homestay. Some hosts may prepare a big breakfast with eggs, toast, bacon, fruit, coffee or tea, but most will offer something simple like toast or cereal and coffee. Other hosts prefer a "serve yourself" policy where you can help yourself to whatever you want in the morning.

Manhattan homestays are about 20 to 30 minutes to EC New York.

Visa support

We cannot apply for visas on behalf of students. However, the school can supply you with all the documentation you need to support your visa application.

If you are studying full time in the United States for more than 18 hours per week, you will receive an I-20 that you need to submit to the US embassy along with your F-1 student visa application. The I-20 has a SEVIS tracking number on it. Students who wish to apply for a student visa must pay the SEVIS fee online before going to the US embassy or consulate for their visa interview.

Your I-20 will be sent to your home address by regular mail at no charge to you. If you wish to receive your paperwork by express mail, you will be charged $80 when you register.

Please note that United States law states that an I-20 can only be issued to students who intend to pursue full-time English language studies. United States law does not permit students to study part-time with an F-1 Student Visa. If you are studying for less than 18 hours per week, you have to apply for a Visitor Visa (B1/B2) on your own.
