Situated to the east of the Panama Canal is Panama City, the cosmopolitan capital. Explore until dusk at the city ruins of Panamá Viejo or dance until dawn at the clubs of Casco Viejo. Dine on classic arepas or at trendy restaurants serving international fare. It is easily Central America's most exciting capital and if you can manage to tear yourself away, the mountains, beaches and rainforests are even more exciting. Find relief from the busy capital on the sublime beaches of Bocas del Toros in the northwest. Relax on pristine white sands or in a wooden cabin floating above the water. When the tropical weather gets too hot, snorkel the extensive and colorful coral reefs. Get the heart pumping by trekking to the summit of inactive Baru Volcano or by walking along scenic Sendero Los Quetzales to spot the rare quetzal and other magnificent bird species. Relax in Boquete, a mountain town near the national park, by soaking in the hot springs and sipping on a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or locally grown coffee.
